Illocutionary Pragmatic Adaptation Challenge: Ukrainian Translations of English-language Soft Law Texts

The article introduces the concept of illocutionary pragmatic adaptation (IPA) as a local translation aimed at replacing, de-intensifying or strengthening modality in Ukrainian translations English-language soft law texts. idea IPA is based on premises forces–modality correlation, their graded nature added by adaptation, its types, criteria, and strategies. Basic means include shall-associated transformations to softer should-associated harder law. omission shall results transforming explicit directives into two-intentional assertives, effecting replacement obligative an epistemic belief that rule should be followed instead requirement for observation. Replacing modal verb recommendation with obligation “повинні» (must) leads transformation one directive force. paper has identified three factors IPA: (1) genre-related, which determines target text either genres source text; (2) discursive space core values decrease force modality; (3) factor context.
